b.1983 – Texas, USA
Katrina Jane is interested in social and environmental paradoxes. Jane’s interdisciplinary practice looks at encounters in the natural world as a means to question a notion of the self in relationship to our place in the order of all things–the ecological self. Conceptual works address nexus relationships observed in Nature and the human condition. Emphasis is placed on hierarchical structures between the role of a caretaker and beneficiary that question interdependencies–a means to awaken the viewer to the reciprocity necessary for symbiosis among all beings.
A process of word-form geometry created by Jane posits an alternative method of communication; a form of inclusive visual literacy that questions the energetic possibilities of language systems beyond conventional modalities.
Jane holds a M.A. in Fine Arts from the Iceland Academy of the Arts, Listaháskóli Íslands (2019), and a B.A. in Fine Arts from The University of Texas at Austin (2008). She is the recipient of numerous residencies and scholarships, including the Student Innovation Grant awarded by Rannís, The Icelandic Centre for Research, UiB Kunst, Musikk, Design in Bergen, Norway and the Department of Stone Sculpture in Évora, Portugal.
In 2016 Jane circumnavigated Iceland on a solo, self-supported cycling journey as a psychophysical artistic research. The traverse of over 1200 kilometers in 33-days began as an exploration into the relationship between spirituality and endurance. A visual-textual documentation critical of the ecological impacts of tourism, specifically man-made constructs as a commodification and objectification of Nature, ensued. Themes related to environmental issues and ecological literacy remain paramount in her artistic practice.
Jane is the founder of ETTA, a textile-based design collaboration with artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico. This project supports women entrepreneurs of Fundación En Vía – a non-profit working to empower women through microfinance and educational programming in the Oaxaca Valley.
