WORD–FORM Translations

Language is a dwelling of clarity and obscurity. Eleven intaglio prints represent word-form translations through a system I developed using a hierarchal study of the English alphabet. My methodology observes relationships between visual and verbal possibility, reimagining words as sculptural meditations—an experiment in questioning the hierarchy of linguistic systems through conceptual creation.

This semiotic system was created out of a desire to communicate with my schizophrenic father. Considering the consequences of his mental illness, this method is a way to represent significance beyond what is signified in spoken and written word. A process of word-form translations posits an alternative method of communication; a form of inclusive visual literacy that questions the energetic possibilities of language systems beyond conventional modalities.

Word-form translations represented in this collection are: courage, fear, temperance, lust, just, envy, silence, pride, greed, sloth, endurance, time, prudence, hope, love, evolve. This book is one in an edition of two copies, 29.5cm x 22.5cm, acrylic ink, pencil, paper, rubber bands; 11 pages. Translations is an evolving body of work that includes a digitally woven tapestry, intaglio prints, installations, and expanded approaches in drawing.
