Language is a dwelling of clarity and obscurity. Eleven intaglio prints represent word-form geometries through a system of translation I developed using a hierarchal study of the English alphabet. My methodology observes relationships between visual and verbal possibility, reimagining words as sculptural meditations—an experiment in questioning the hierarchy of linguistic systems through conceptual creation.
This semiotic system was created out of a desire to communicate with my schizophrenic father. Considering the consequences of his mental illness, this method is a way to represent significance beyond what is signified in spoken and written word. Word-form translations represented in this collection are: courage, fear, temperance, lust, just, envy, silence, pride, greed, sloth, endurance, time, prudence, hope, love, evolve. This book is one in an edition of two copies, 29.5cm x 22.5cm, acrylic ink, pencil, paper, rubber bands; 11 pages.
